Anyways, the upgrade happened on account of the ever lovely and talented Mary Helen Bowers. She is the founder of Ballet Beautiful , a ballet inspired workout similar to barre, but involves more flowy, bigger movements in the center and on the floor without the use of a ballet barre.
Alongside a few blogging buddies, I took a condensed version of one of her classes and the ballerina in me fell for the style of workout right away. I left the event wanting to try the full classes and after getting a message from Julie earlier this week, I found out you can stream her Ballet Beautiful DVDs online , totally free for site Prime members!
Since then, both Gina and Julie have tried her Total Body Workout and you can see their reviews here and here. With the itch to try something new today, I put on my True Studio Slippers to see exactly what all the fuss is all about.
In just under an hour, I completed a set of exercises that targeted the glutes, abs, inner and outer thighs, and arms. The best way I can describe it is a fun and graceful full-body workout meant to focus on, tighten and tone an area at a time, without the use of weights.
MHB is very soft-spoken and the DVD brought me right back to ballet classes with piano tunes, frequent stretching and her use of dance terminology like first position, rond de jambe, and degage. I just so happen to personally appreciate the references. The video started with twenty minutes of bridges, which is actually one of my favorite exercises.
I have to admit that the moves felt a tad repetitive since they all happened in four sets of eight counts until the next change, but that is also very similar to the style of a lot of barre classes out there. If there is one thing I could change about it, it would be the music.
I enjoyed the piano, but feel like more upbeat tunes might make the workout go by faster.
Overall, I am definitely a Ballet Beautiful fan! I loved the fact that ninety percent of the workout was done on the floor, and that none of it required any type of equipment.

That said, I felt this book was a little too Ballet Beautiful propaganda-ish. I almost felt like I was being brainwashed a little, haha. The exercises themselves are great, and they are actually quite unique and distinct from other exercise programs warning: I don't think the exercises would be easy to follow using the book alone. The "Ballet Beautiful lifestyle" isn't any 3. The "Ballet Beautiful lifestyle" isn't anything new, though: I guess I expected something a little more novel in that area.
I did really like that she sort of told her story throughout the book--that's probably what I enjoyed most. She makes herself relatable and even more likeable. Overall, the book didn't blow me away like I was expecting it to, being a big MBH fan, but I would still recommend it to anyone already interested.

She is promoting and expanding her Ballet Beautiful BB brand. I also agree that following the exercises could be challenging if 1 you have no ballet experience 2 you have not seen the BB videos. However, I do like that she includes the stretches and the exercise in each section, rather than asking the reading to flip back and forth in the book.

The author lays out the workout from start stretch to finish stretch for us, rather than asking the reader to cobble together a workout from different sections of the book. I started doing Ballet Beautiful last January, and in a year my whole concept of working out has changed. I have been working out in various ways for 30 years. This workout is the only one I have done that has actually changed my body shape.
Additonal benefits are that I am more gracefull and less stressed probably due to the MHB's use of classical music and her gemtle and encouraging personality. I also The five stars here aren't just for the book but for the whole Ballet Beautiful lifestyle.
I also started doing kundalini yoga this year and the combination of the two has truly been life changing. This book contains MHB's philosophy, descriptions of the workouts, and healthing suggestions and recipes.

I'm already stronger, just doing the elements I know I can handle with my disabilities. My dance background was spotty at best, and also nearly 30 years ago. Some movements got srsly confusing in the text. Good thing there are vids online. However, the part 1 is a bit too lengthy with a repeated message, even though the content is well-written. Sometimes it does sound like a rehearsed customer speech without a personal touch though. Part 3 has good advices on a sustainable eating plan and it's great, but felt a bit lacking as there are so many similar books out there. I need the book for the workouts!

Also, I tend to get annoyed with people who pretend to have expertise in numerous areas; Bowers, you are a ballerina, so just talk about ballet; don't try to tell us how and what to eat. I am not interested in your recipes. Cannot wait to get started on the beautiful ballet program!! This book has awesome workouts that you can do at home with no knowledge of ballet needed!
You can tailor it to the amount of time you have spare for a workout, 15, 30 or 60 minutes. It also includes recipes and snack ideas plus it gets you to re-think how you feel about yourself and teaches you too tune out the negative thoughts and focus on the positive.
