The arrows are there to demonstrate how your nib should move as it creates each drill. That exemplar continues without arrows, and finally fades into gray. Feel free to use a straight pen or an oblique pen , and whichever nib that you prefer!

No matter what the result, you should be proud of yourself for sticking with it and filling out the sheet. I have a couple questions regarding pen verse brush pen? I have been working out of a calligraphy book that came with a cartridge pen. To my untrained eye, it looks like there might be some differences in basic strokes for pen verses brush pen. Is that correct or am I making things too complicated?
If there is a difference, what do you recommend for a very new beginner? Hi Kate! But basically, the difference between a dip pen and a brush pen is in the way that you hold them. The brush pen will move as you write like a regular pen , where as the dip pen, you keep still. Thank you, Lindsey, your practice drill sheets are beautiful, and I enjoy using them. Do you have any drills specifically for left-handed writers? Using an oblique dip pen helps, but it would be great to also have some practice drills.
Good luck with your new baby. Wishing you an easy birth and wonderful maternity leave getting to know your little one.
There are some who write with a hook, others who come from the bottom basically, mirroring right-handed writers , and still others who write best with a right oblique and a severe paper rotation!

Love this calming calligraphy drills sheet! Most of these drills make no sense. You have thin and think lines drawn on a 45 degree angle, which is impossible if you are holding a pen tip at the proper 45 degrees.
If people are really using these drills to learn, they are learning something very, very wrong. Please explain. Type in Copperplate calligraphy in google, go to images and look at how all the letters are written at an angle.
Damn near every form of Script calligraphy is written at an angle, so I am not sure why you think these drills would be wrong.
